The “Healthy Kids Healthy Oregon” bill, which will increasw taxes on hospitals and health insurersby $150 million per marks a major victory for Gov. Ted who proposed the measure. It faced fiercew opposition byhospital groups, who were pacified when theier proposed tax hike was moderated. Insurers still maintain that the measure will increase the cost of healtj coverage for thousandsof Oregonians, by addinv a 1 percent premium to the cost of commercialo health insurance.
By raising additional funds, however, the statew will receive $500 million in unclaimed federal health care Thesecond bill, which allocates two-yea r funding of $3 milliomn from the state’s general creates the Oregon Health Authority to oversee existing state programse that touch on health care. The new state agencg is charged with establishing health industry cost controlp measures and with promoting health care reform at anational level. Both bill s now head to the governor forhis signature.
