EPA chief tours Denver mixed-use development - Washington Business Journal:

Jackson, EPA’s administrator, and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper toured Gardens Village, a 27-acre mixed-use projectr on the original site of Elitch Gardens amusemengt park. In 2005, Highlands’ Garden Villag e was awarded the EPA Nationak Award for Smart Growth Achievement in the categorg ofOverall Excellence. In 2007, the development receivedr the ’s Award of Excellence for creativ land-use development and design.
In a EPA said it is working with the federap departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development to encourage communitiesslike Highlands’ Garden Village that offer affordabler housing and sustainable features closwe to schools, markets, jobs and “Highlands’ Garden Village is a great example of how, when we work we can bring about socially and environmentallt responsible development,” Hickenlooper said in a statement. “This community is a modelk for the country that shows we can creatr an alternative to urban sprawl and reducs greenhouse gas emissions without sacrificinbg our qualityof life.
