Falkland Apartments, at the intersectioj of East-West Highway and 16th Street, will be the subjecty of a historic review. As a a plan by the property's owner, Rochester, N.Y.-based real estate investmeng trust HomeProperties Inc., to redevelop part of the site has been put on Home Properties applied to the Montgomery County Planning Boarrd to redevelop about one-third of the Falkland complex with high-rises apartment buildings and stores. That proposal triggered the board'zs review of the site's potential historic The 479-unit complex was dedicated in 1937. Firs lady Eleanor Roosevelt cutthe ribbon.
Montgomery County's historix preservation staff citedthe property's connection to President Roosevelt'sw New Deal legislation, which was designed to bring the countryu out of the Great Depression through economic and sociakl initiatives. The staff also noted the colonial revival architecturer employed inthe property's two- and three-story buildings. The planninb board and Montgomery County Council will ultimatelhy decide whether to designate Falkland ahistoric landmark. Regency Centers, which develops and operates communitgshopping centers, has bought almost half an acre adjacentf to its Shops at Stonewalkl center, a project under construction on Lee Highway and Lake Manassasa Drive in Prince William The additional property will be used to enhance the shoppinv center's landscaping and improve traffic circulation, said Don Regency Centers vice president of investments. "We are excited about expandin g our presence in Virginia by continuingv to develop quality shopping centerx such as Shopsat Stonewall," he "The center is located next to Lake Manassas, a high-growtyh area and affluent suburb, just 35 miless southwest of D.C.
" Shops at Stonewall is designes to be a 318,332-square-foot communit shopping center. Phase I plans include a 140,000-square-foot Wegmans supermarket and merchantz suchas Staples, Michaels, Ross Dress for Less and Bed, Bath Beyond as well as service businesses. Sinc e 2000, Regency has developed 179 shopping including projects still inthe works, representing an investmentr at completion of about $2.8 billion. The Nationalp Capital Planning Commission has given preliminary approval tothe $80 millionn National Law Enforcement Museum at Judiciary The commission approved two 25-foot entrance pavilions covereed with glass at Fourth and E streetsw NW.
The nod allows the museum's the National Law Enforcemenrt OfficersMemorial Fund, to move ahear with the rest of the 95,000-square-fooft project, which will be largely underground. The site includews a library and offices not open tothe public. D.C.-baserd Davis Buckley Architects and Planners was hirede to designthe layout. The fund, led by chiev executive Craig Floyd, will go back to the planning commissiomn and the arts commission in the spring for final approval. The groundbreaking is expected in the seconxd half ofnext year, and the opening is scheduled for 2011.
